Aisha Okonkwo graduated from her coaching certification program in September 2024. By December, she had 12 paying clients and a clear niche. This is her honest account of how she got there.
Month 1: Building the Foundation
Aisha's first priority was infrastructure — not clients. She set up her FollowUp profile, created a simple website, and defined her niche: first-generation university graduates navigating career transitions.
"Everyone told me to niche down, and I resisted it. I thought I'd exclude people. The opposite happened. The more specific I got, the more people recognized themselves."
She also committed to producing one piece of content per week — a LinkedIn article about the psychological challenges she'd faced herself.
Month 2: Outreach and Offers
With her foundation set, Aisha launched three discovery calls per week — offered free to her network and warm contacts. Of 24 calls, 7 converted to paid clients.
Her initial offer: a 6-week coaching package at $350. Intentionally below market rate, intentionally time-bounded. She wanted testimonials and experience more than revenue.
Month 3: Refinement and Referrals
By month three, her first cohort had completed. Three provided testimonials. Two referred colleagues. She raised her rate to $450 and filled the remaining spots.
What She'd Do Differently
- Start content creation during certification, not after
- Get a mentor in month one, not month three
- Stop waiting to feel ready — readiness follows action, not precedes it
"The hardest part wasn't the business," Aisha reflects. "It was believing I had something worth offering. That's the real work."
